Here’s what I didn’t expect: I would fall in love with a country because of the rain. Because of the moody sky. Because of weather that makes you want to wear a good cardigan and sit in a cafe without feeling like you’re missing something better outside. Because of thousands of years of rich history and buildings that all tell a story.

I live in Florida now. Florida is beautiful...but relentless. It’s 85 degrees and humid at 7am. Sunshine every single day sounds amazing until you realize everything is bright and intense and demanding.

Edinburgh was the opposite.

The first morning we walked out into soft grey light. There was a cool breeze. Fresh air. The weather wasn’t threatening rain...it was just quietly overcast. My kids wore jackets that actually made sense. We could walk for hours without sunburn or heat making everyone irritable by 2pm.

This was revolutionary.

But here’s what surprised me more than the weather: Edinburgh is genuinely gorgeous if you’re willing to slow down. The Royal Mile is touristy, yes...but there’s a reason. You feel the history in the cobblestones. You look up at buildings that have stood for centuries and actually feel the weight of all that happened before us.

J.K. Rowling wrote the Harry Potter series in an Edinburgh cafe. Walking those streets, you understand why—there’s something about this city that demands imagination. The closes (those tiny medieval alleyways) feel like they belong in a fantasy novel. There’s magic in the details.

We explored castles. We wandered the closes. We found a whisky bar tucked behind a door that looked like it belonged to a secret society. We sat in gardens and watched locals actually exist. Not perform. Just be.

Here’s what actually worked (and what didn’t):

Scotland is expensive—I won’t sugarcoat that. But the points value is solid if you know where to look. We stayed at the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa Edinburgh, a Marriott property, and booked five nights on points with the fifth night free. The spa was the real win—Scotland’s most renowned urban thermal spa with a rooftop hydropool overlooking Edinburgh Castle, a 19-metre infinity pool, salt room, hammam, and thermal suite. After days wandering cobblestone streets and exploring castles, having a place for the kids to burn off steam was invaluable.

What we did: The location was perfect. Walking distance to Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, and Princes Street. You can explore the entire city center on foot. In Edinburgh, you’re not fighting the city to enjoy it. The weather slows you down naturally. The layout encourages wandering, not rushing.

We also took a guided tour into the Highlands—an unforgettable experience. I love a good, guided tour almost as much as aimless wandering, especially when I don’t have to drive on the wrong side of the road. We saw rolling hills, clear lakes and streams, the exact place Bruce declared war on the English, the castle where Mary Queen of Scots was held, and explored Loch Ness hoping to spot something legendary. It was the kind of experience that makes you understand why Scotland feels mythical.

On food: We didn’t fall in love with everything we tried, but when you know where to go, Edinburgh delivers. Dishoom was iconic—the kind of meal that makes you want to return just for that restaurant. Fish and chips from Piscatorial Chipper. Whisky from the rooftop bar at the Johnnie Walker Experience that tastes like history. The key is planning, not wandering.

Where we stayed, and why it mattered

We checked into Hotel du Louvre. The location is unbeatable...steps from the Louvre, the Tuileries, and half the things on your list. It’s also a Hyatt, which means my Globalist status got us complimentary breakfast and a room upgrade to a junior suite...which meant my whole family stayed in one room. If you know anything about European hotels, you know that’s a big deal. More on how to request a suite upgrade below, plus my exact template that has successfully got me and my clients upgraded at least 95% of the time.

Breakfast for a family of four in Paris is not a small line item. Neither is space. Those two perks alone changed the math on this hotel.

Day 1: Land, walk, hot chocolate

Do not book anything on arrival day. I mean it. Everyone’s nervous system needs time to reset after a transatlantic flight with kids.

We checked in, dropped bags, and walked straight to the Jardin des Tuileries so the kids could run. Green space on day one is the jet lag cure nobody talks about. My older son ended up in a pickup soccer game with the Eiffel Tower in the background...one of those parent moments you don’t forget.

After they got their energy out, we ended at Angelina for the richest hot chocolate of our lives. It’s basically warm pudding in a cup. The kids still bring it up. And since we were still on EST, we stayed up late and watched the Eiffel Tower sparkle.

Day 2: Eiffel Tower, done the smart way

Here’s the move that saved us...we split up. Summit tickets for the big kid and dad, second floor for me and the toddler. The second floor is still a wow. You don’t need to drag a stroller to the very top to feel the magic.

Book timed tickets in advance, always. We took the 1:30pm slot...no rushed mornings, no cranky kids. The line without timed tickets will eat your entire afternoon. Heads up: the official ticket website is finicky. If it’s sold out, go to Viator...many of those tours include entry tickets.

Post-tower crepes at Crêperie Elo. A crepe in hand buys you 45 minutes of happy walking.

Day 3: Montmartre

Morning at the Arc de Triomphe, then up to Montmartre for cobbled streets, street artists, and Sacré-Cœur at the top of the hill. Real talk: the cobblestones are no joke with a stroller. Go slow, build in stops. Ours were hot chocolate at Carette and crepes at La Crêperie Brocéliande. In Paris with kids, the snack IS the itinerary.

Hot tip: take the Funicular up and down the hill. Quick, easy, and kids think it’s a ride.

Day 4: Versailles, the version that works with kids

This is the day people skip with kids. It was the day mine loved most.

We booked a private tour...private car from Paris, skip-the-line palace access, and the thing that made it all work: a golf cart tour of the gardens. Versailles’ grounds are massive. Little legs cannot walk them. Little legs absolutely can ride a golf cart past fountains and pretend they’re royalty.

Was the private tour a splurge? Yes. Was it the difference between a magical day and a meltdown in a two-hour ticket line? Also yes. The cheapest option is often the most expensive mistake.

Day 5: Art + playgrounds

If you can only pick one museum, pick the Musée d’Orsay over the Louvre. It’s smaller, brighter, and those giant clocks stop kids in their tracks.

Then: Jardin du Luxembourg. Best playground in Paris, toy sailboats on the fountain, and a picnic on the lawn that was one of the best meals of the trip...and the cheapest.

We ended the evening at the Trocadéro. As someone who spent her whole life wanting to see the Eiffel Tower...it brought tears to my eyes. Best spot for family photos in front of the tower, full stop.

That’s the rhythm that works: one anchor activity in the morning, one kid-friendly thing in the afternoon. Every single day.

Day 6: The Louvre, on our terms

We saved the Louvre for near the end, and we did it with a private guide who took us straight to the hits: Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, the Crown Jewels. Two focused hours beat four aimless ones in a building with very little air conditioning in the summer heat. Kids don’t need the whole Louvre...they need a treasure hunt. Personally, I could spend a week in the Louvre taking it all in. My kids? Not so much. A tour is the perfect way to be efficient with your time, make it entertaining for young people, and still take it all in.

Then we hit the Tuileries Summer Carnival. Rides, games, sweet treats, golden hour in the middle of Paris. If you’re going in summer, do not miss it. It’s the memory they’ll talk about on the flight home.

Day 7: Shopping, lunch under the dome, and Notre-Dame

Galeries Lafayette Haussmann first. Even if you buy nothing, walk in and look UP. That stained glass dome stops everyone cold, and the free rooftop terrace has one of the best Eiffel Tower views in the city.

Then Notre-Dame. Seeing it reopened after the fire was genuinely special. Reserve your free timed entry through the official app before you go...the walk-up line is long, and your last afternoon in Paris is too precious to spend in it.

We ended with one last golden-hour walk along the Seine. Cue the tears (mine, not the kids’).

What I’d tell you before you book

Pace it like a therapist, because I am one. Almost 20 years as an occupational therapist taught me this: kids don’t fail at travel, itineraries fail kids. One anchor activity per day. Daily green space and time to run around. Snacks as scheduled events, not emergencies and flexibility is the name of the game.

Split up when it makes sense. Summit for some, second floor for others. Nobody has to do everything.

Pay for skip-the-line. Every time. Your vacation days are worth more than the upcharge.

Use your points where they hurt most. Flights and hotel breakfasts are the two biggest costs of a Paris trip for a family. Both are solvable with the right cards and the right program.

Life is too short for a bad vacation...and Paris with kids doesn’t have to be one.

What transferable points actually are

Not all points are created equal. There are two basic types of rewards currency, and the difference changes everything about how useful your points will be for you.

Co-branded points live inside one program. Think Marriott Bonvoy points from a Marriott card, or Delta SkyMiles from a Delta card. They’re earned in one place and spent in one place. Useful if you’re loyal to that one brand. Useless everywhere else. They also may expire if you don’t use them for a while and you may lose them.

Transferable points are bank currencies. Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou Points, Capital One Miles. These live in your bank credit card account, not in any single airline or hotel program, and you get to decide later where they go. You can move them to an airline, a hotel, or in some cases just cash them out. (But one warning, you get a lot more value for them if you learn how to use them correctly versus buying a coffee maker on the credit card shopping portal for your points.)

That flexibility is the whole game. You’re not betting on one loyalty program for the next five years. You’re keeping your options open until you actually need them.

How a transfer works

When you transfer, you move points out of your bank’s rewards portal and into a specific airline or hotel account. A few things to know before you do this:

- Most transfers happen at a 1:1 ratio, though this varies by program and can change (more on that below)

- Transfers are one directional. Once your points land in Hyatt or Delta or wherever, they’re NOT coming back to your bank account

- Speed varies. Some transfers post instantly. Others take a few days, occasionally longer

- You need to open an account with that partner (i.e. Hyatt or United Airlines) and have a loyalty number from them already established before you attempt to initiate a transfer

- You need the actual card that earns that currency. Not every card that earns “Chase points” can transfer them to partners, for example

That last one trips people up constantly. Earning the points and having transfer access are two different things, and I’ll get to which cards actually unlock it below.

The mistake that costs families the most money

Do not transfer points before you have a specific flight or hotel stay in mind.

I know it feels productive to move your points over to your favorite hotel program the second you see a decent transfer bonus. Resist it. Award availability changes constantly, award charts can be reworked overnight, and once your points are sitting in that program, you’re stuck with whatever that program decides your points are worth going forward.

The right order is: find the flight or room you want, confirm the seats or nights actually exist, price it out in points, and only then transfer exactly what you need. (Don’t do a test run when you transfer points, i.e. first transfer 1 point to see if it worked and then try to transfer 50k. It will likely get flagged for fraud and will hold up the actual transferring of points you wanted to do.)

How to actually maximize what you get

This is the part most beginner guides skip because it can be a little confusing, so here’s a quick explanation on how to easily do it.

A transfer bonus is only good if you were going to use those points there anyway. Banks run temporary bonuses (say, 25 or 30 percent extra) to specific partners to get you to move your points. A bonus feels exciting, but if you don’t have a use for that airline or hotel program, you’re just moving points into a place with worse redemption value for no reason. A great bonus to a program you’ll never book is not a deal. It’s a trap. You can only transfer points one way and you will not be able to move them again if you change your mind.

Not all points are created equal or worth the same amount. A Chase point and a Marriott point are not interchangeable in value even at a 1:1 transfer ratio, because what you can actually redeem them for is wildly different. Hotel points in general tend to be worth less per point than airline miles, which tend to be worth less than the flexible bank currency itself. So a “1:1 transfer” can still be a bad trade even with zero fees involved, if you’re moving from a stronger currency to a weaker one.

Watch for ratio changes, not just bonuses. This is a live example happening right now: Chase is changing its Ultimate Rewards to World of Hyatt transfer ratio from 1:1 down to 4:3 for the Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred cards. That means 10,000 Chase points used to become 10,000 Hyatt points, and soon it’ll become 7,500. If you already hold one of those cards, you keep the old 1:1 rate through the end of September 2026, and then the new ratio kicks in. If you’re a Hyatt family like me and a lot of my clients, this is the kind of change that actually matters more than any short term bonus, because it permanently changes what your points are worth going forward. The Sapphire Reserve keeps the 1:1 rate for now, which is worth knowing if Hyatt is central to your strategy.

I’m flagging this as a live example of how these things move, not as permanent advice. Ratios and bonuses shift constantly, so always check the current terms on your card issuer’s site before you transfer anything.

What a transfer bonus actually is

A transfer bonus is a limited time offer where the bank or the partner program gives you extra points on top of the standard transfer rate. If Chase offers a 30 percent bonus to an airline, moving 10,000 Chase points gets you 13,000 miles instead of 10,000.

My rule of thumb: if the bonus is going to a program you already planned to use, take it. If it’s going somewhere you have no immediate plan for, let it pass. There will be another bonus. There’s always another bonus.

So what exactly are transfer partners, and why do we want to use them

Chase transfer partners

Chase Ultimate Rewards transfers to 10 airlines and 4 hotel programs, all at 1:1 (with the Hyatt exception noted above):

Airlines: Aer Lingus, Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, British Airways, Iberia, JetBlue, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Southwest, United, Virgin Atlantic

Hotels: IHG, Marriott, World of Hyatt, Wyndham

What 100,000 Chase points could actually book:

If you’re a Reserve holder, 100,000 points transferred to World of Hyatt at 1:1 could cover roughly 4 to 5 nights at a mid-tier category Hyatt, the kind of property that works well for a family week at a resort like the Baha Mar Resort in the Bahamas. If you’d rather fly, transferring to Air France/KLM Flying Blue or Virgin Atlantic can open up business class seats to Europe, since these airlines price business class awards lower than most U.S. carriers. Exact pricing shifts constantly and depends on the specific route and award chart, so treat this as a ballpark and always check real award availability before you transfer a single point.

Amex transfer partners

Amex Membership Rewards transfers to 17 airlines and 3 hotel programs, more partners than any other bank currency:

Airlines: Aer Lingus, Aeromexico, Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, ANA, Avianca LifeMiles, British Airways, Delta, Emirates, Iberia, JetBlue, Qantas, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Virgin Atlantic, and a few smaller regional partners

Hotels: Hilton, Marriott, Choice

What 100,000 Amex points could actually book:

Business class to Europe is the classic Amex move. Transferring to Air France/KLM Flying Blue, a one way business class seat from the U.S. to Paris can run somewhere in the 50,000 to 60,000 mile range depending on the route, so 100,000 Amex points can realistically get one person a round trip in business, or reposition into two one way premium tickets for a family splitting up an itinerary. If your family leans hotels instead, transferring to Hilton can stretch further since Hilton’s award chart uses more points per dollar of value, so it usually makes sense to compare the actual redemption you want before deciding where 100,000 points goes furthest.

Best cards to get if you want transferable points

If you want access to this whole world, you need a card that actually earns a transferable currency and unlocks transfer partners. Here’s where I’d start, with a family lens:

- Chase Sapphire Preferred — the classic beginner card into Ultimate Rewards. Reasonable annual fee, real transfer partners, and it’s the card most of my clients start with

- Amex Gold — I’ve written before about why this quietly beats the “everyone’s favorite travel card” for families, mostly because of how it earns on groceries and restaurants, which is where families actually spend

- Citi Strata Premier — a solid second transferable currency to diversify away from relying on one bank’s bonus calendar

You don’t need all of these. You need one that earns a real transferable currency, and a clear idea of where you actually want to go with the points before you touch the transfer button.

Here’s what actually earning the points looks like day to day. The Sapphire Preferred earns 5 points per dollar on travel booked through Chase Travel, 3 points per dollar on dining, gas and EV charging, vacation rentals like Airbnb and Vrbo, select streaming, and online groceries (excluding Target, Walmart, and wholesale clubs), 2 points per dollar on all other travel, and 1 point per dollar on everything else. For a family, that gas and grocery category alone can add up fast without you changing a single spending habit. The Amex Gold works differently since it’s built around food. You get 4 points per dollar at restaurants worldwide (up to $50,000 a year) and 4 points per dollar at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 a year), plus 3 points per dollar on flights booked directly with the airline or through Amex Travel. If your family spends heavily on groceries and eating out, which most families with kids do, the Amex Gold can out earn cards with a flashier reputation without you doing anything differently.

Putting it all together: the actual strategy

Here’s the part that ties all of this into something you can act on instead of just filing away as trivia.

Pick your ecosystem before you pick a card.

Don’t apply for cards one at a time based on whichever bonus looks biggest that week. Look at where you actually want to go, whether it’s Hawaii resorts, a Hyatt-heavy hotel strategy, or business class to Europe, and work backward to the bank currency that gets you there. If Hyatt is your family’s thing, Chase matters more than Amex. If you’re chasing Flying Blue business class seats to Europe, both Chase and Amex transfer there, so either currency (or both) can get you to the same seat.

Look for overlap between your cards.

This is the part nobody tells beginners. Chase and Amex both transfer to Air France/KLM Flying Blue and Virgin Atlantic. That means if you hold cards from both banks, you’re not splitting your points into two smaller, less useful piles, you’re building two paths to the same redemption. When you’re deciding which second card to add to your wallet, check whether its transfer partners actually complement the ones you already have instead of just duplicating them.

Don’t stockpile in five different programs.

A little bit of Delta, a little bit of United, a little bit of Marriott adds up to nothing usable when it’s time to book. Two strong, flexible bank currencies with overlapping partners will get your family further than five scattered piles of points you’re always a little short in.

The multiplayer strategy: let your household earn as a team.

If you have a spouse or partner, you don’t have to run this solo. Many programs let you combine points earned on separate cards into one account when it’s time to book, which means two people opening two cards (even the same card) can mean two welcome bonuses stacking toward one family trip. A few ways this plays out in real families:

- Each parent opens their own version of the same card (say, one Sapphire Preferred each) to double the welcome bonus, then pool the points into one account for the redemption

- One parent runs the Chase ecosystem, the other runs Amex, so your household has two flexible currencies growing at once instead of putting all your spending on a single card

- Put your family’s biggest recurring expenses, like groceries, gas, and dining, on whichever card earns the most in that category, and use a second card only for its specific bonus categories, rather than defaulting to one card for everything

This is exactly how our family got to business class to Paris for under $700 in taxes. It wasn’t one lucky bonus. It was two of us earning in different places, everyday spending redirected to the categories that actually pay, and points that sat untouched until we had a real flight in mind.

That’s the whole system. Pick your currency, know your partners, get your household earning together, and wait for the redemption that’s actually worth it.

This last one started on my couch, watching Julia Roberts eat her way through Italy in Eat Pray Love. When the Italians in that film talk about il dolce far niente, the sweetness of doing nothing, something in me was inspired. Especially when travelling with children time is a luxury. Exploring random parks and letting your kids play in new spaces is always exciting to me (and them) and it’s a good break from all the traditional sightseeing, breaking up the pace of things and letting them relax and just be.

Here’s the other truth nobody tells you about Italy. You can do it cheap, you can do it fancy, but the people getting the best value are the ones doing it on points and paying for the parts that actually matter. (But I’ve included the best cash options too, if that’s how you’re doing it.)

So we did it the slow and leisurely way. Two weeks, five home bases, two kids, one very tired husband, and a lot of gelato. Below is exactly what we did in each place, the real stuff, plus how I’d book it today if I were planning it for a client or for my own family.

Here’s how to use this guide, because it’s built to work two ways. For every city I give you both playbooks: the luxury hotels worth booking on points (Hyatt, Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton, and IHG), the ones worth paying cash for, and the restaurants and sights to build your days around. Whether you’re a points person chasing free nights or you’d rather just pay and have it handled, you can plan the entire trip from this one piece. And here’s the genuinely new and exciting bit for 2026: Lake Como just got its first real points hotels, ever. A lake that was always a cash-only destination is suddenly bookable with Marriott and Hilton points, which is reason enough to look at Italy differently this year.

A quick but important note on rooms, because this is the question I get most from families. In Europe, a standard luxury room is usually built for two, sometimes three, almost never four (due to strict laws and fire codes). So, for a family of four, one room is rarely the answer. Every hotel I recommend below can host all four of you, but the way you book it is a suite, a junior suite, a family room, or two connecting rooms. That is the part I sort out for clients, and it is worth getting right before you fall in love with a room that sleeps two. I have flagged the easiest properties for four as we go.

And for those of you willing to live on the edge, booking a room for two and hoping you can squeeze four in once you arrive: don’t. Big mistake. When you check into hotels in Italy they ask for everyone’s passport, and if you don’t have the right room type booked, you will either not be able to stay, or you will get hit with huge fees and scramble for a different room type last minute, which can be a disaster. Trust me, I’ve seen it happen.

Okay. Let’s go to Italy.

Rome

This was our anchor city, and honestly the section I have the most notes on, because Rome rewards slowing down. I love Rome. It is so magical, a beautiful combination of history and excitement. You walk the streets basking in the beauty and remembering all the history of those who were here before us. It is more than inspiring.

What we actually did: the Pantheon and Raphael’s tomb (free, stunning, go early), Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and the church at the top, the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine, the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s. We hunted down Bernini’s elephant and Michelangelo’s Christ the Redeemer at Santa Maria sopra Minerva. We walked the Via Appia Antica out to the Tomb of Cecilia Metella and the Catacombs of San Callisto. We did the Galleria Borghese (book ahead, always), Castel Sant’Angelo, the Jewish Ghetto and Isola Tiberina, and Largo di Torre Argentina, which is now a proper archaeological site you can see into. We ate dinners in Trastevere, near Piazza Navona, and twice at the food market in Campo de’ Fiori. And yes, the best gelato of my life happened in Rome and I will not be taking questions.

A quick OT note, because pacing is the difference between a great Rome and a meltdown: the Vatican and the Colosseum on the same day is a trap. Both are huge, both involve standing, potentially long lines, huge crowds, and walking on hard stone for hours. Split them onto different days, and put a long lunch and a sit-down between any two big sites. Your knees, and your kids, will thank you (and maybe save your marriage too)

Beyond the big hits, here’s what I’d add:

• The Capitoline Museums on the Campidoglio (the original she-wolf, plus a terrace view over the Forum)

• The Aventine keyhole and the Orange Garden next door, for the secret framed view of St. Peter’s dome

• The Testaccio Market for a proper food morning

• A slow evening passeggiata through Trastevere once the day-trippers clear out

• A rooftop bar at golden hour for a glass of Italian wine and the Colosseum glowing in the distance

Where to eat in Rome

The Roman holy trinity is carbonara, cacio e pepe, and amatriciana, and you want them at a real trattoria, not a tourist menu with photos out front. My shortlist:

• Armando al Pantheon (since 1961, tiny, book well ahead)

• Salumeria Roscioli (just crowned Italy’s best trattoria for 2026, ask for a ground-floor or counter seat)

• Da Felice in Testaccio, for the tableside cacio e pepe

• Piperno in the Jewish Ghetto, for carciofi alla giudia, which pairs perfectly with the afternoon you’ll already spend down there

• Da Enzo al 29 in Trastevere, the classic (no reservations, go early)

• For a special-occasion splurge: Imàgo at the Hassler, or the full three-Michelin-star Heinz Beck experience at La Pergola in the Rome Cavalieri

And that best-gelato-of-my-life claim? Gelateria del Teatro and Fatamorgana are where I’d send you to try to beat it.

Where to stay in Rome on points (the luxury version)

This is where Rome got genuinely exciting in the last year.

• Hyatt Regency Rome Central opened in 2026, steps from Termini, with a rooftop pool, which is rare in central Rome. It’s a Category 4 (think mid-teens to low-twenties-thousand points a night), and a Category 4 is exactly what a Hyatt free night certificate from your card anniversary covers, so this can be an easy free night in Rome. For four, book one of the suites or two connecting rooms, which this property handles well.

• Thompson Rome is Hyatt’s lifestyle play, a small heritage building near Piazza Venezia with a rooftop bar gunning for a World’s 50 Best spot. Cooler and more design-forward, but it’s an intimate property, so a family of four will want one of its suites rather than a standard room.

• Rome Cavalieri, a Waldorf Astoria Hotel (Hilton Honors) sits up in Monte Mario with a 15-acre park, multiple pools, and La Pergola, the only three-Michelin-star restaurant in Rome. It’s not central, but it’s a resort inside the city, and between the pools and the parkland it’s one of the easiest places in Rome for a family of four, with connecting rooms and suites readily available. Amex Membership Rewards transfer to Hilton at 1:2, which makes the points math friendlier than it looks.

• The St. Regis Rome (Marriott Bonvoy) is Belle Epoque grandeur with the nightly champagne sabrage ritual. A splurge in points, but a real one. For four, it’s a suite or connecting rooms.

• The Westin Excelsior, Rome (Marriott Bonvoy) is the other classic Bonvoy play, a 1906 Belle Epoque grande dame on Via Veneto between the Spanish Steps and the Borghese Gardens. Big, traditional, and one of the easier Rome options for families, with roomy family suites and connecting rooms.

• InterContinental Rome Ambasciatori Palace (IHG One Rewards) is the sensible IHG option, a restored 1900 palace on Via Veneto with Scarpetta and a year-round rooftop. The points pricing is far more reasonable than its glitzier IHG sibling (below), and it has suites and connecting rooms for four.

Where to splurge on cash in Rome

If you’re paying cash for the experience, Rome has endless options:

• Hotel de Russie and Hotel de la Ville (both Rocco Forte; de la Ville sits right at the top of the Spanish Steps, which connects beautifully to that whole afternoon we spent up there)

• The Hassler, family-run, at the crown of the steps, with its Michelin-starred Imàgo

• Bulgari Hotel Roma, with Niko Romito’s kitchen and a mosaic pool

• Six Senses Rome, near the Trevi and Pantheon for the wellness crowd (technically an IHG property, but at roughly 300,000 points a night it’s one to book on cash, ideally through Virtuoso for the breakfast and credit)

• Hotel Eden (Dorchester Collection)

• Portrait Roma, the Ferragamo address near the Spanish Steps

For four, the Rocco Forte pair and Portrait do connecting rooms and apartment-style suites most easily. The Bulgari and the Eden are dreamy but skew adult, so plan on one of their larger suites.

Naples

Naples is loud, gritty, and the best food city in Italy. Did we always feel the safest walking around here? No. Would we go back again for the pizza? In a heartbeat.

What we did: the Duomo, a walking tour of the centro storico, and pizza. Real Neapolitan pizza, the kind where the crust is blistered and a little soft in the middle and absolutely correct. We stayed at a palazzo hotel in the historic center, and we used Naples as our launchpad for Pompeii (more on that next).

Naples rewards going underground and looking up:

• The Cappella Sansevero and its impossibly lifelike Veiled Christ

• Napoli Sotterranea, the city beneath the city

• The MANN archaeological museum, where most of Pompeii’s best frescoes and mosaics actually live now, so it doubles as the perfect primer before you head to the ruins

• Spaccanapoli, the dead-straight old street that splits the historic center

• San Gregorio Armeno, the lane of year-round nativity artisans

Where to eat in Naples

This is pizza’s hometown, so the rule is simple: go where the line is.

• L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele and Gino Sorbillo on Via dei Tribunali, the two icons, both gloriously cheap and both worth the wait

• Da Nennella for a loud, communal trattoria night

• A warm sfogliatella and an espresso, always

• For a fine-dining evening, the Michelin tables here are all in the hotels: Il Comandante at Romeo, George at Grand Hotel Parker’s, and the Caruso roof garden at the Vesuvio for that view

  

Naples on points

• De Bonart Naples, Curio Collection by Hilton is the chic, design-forward option in the Chiaia neighborhood, bookable with Hilton Honors. The contemporary alternative to Naples’ grand old dames. Book a suite or connecting rooms for four.

• Renaissance Naples Hotel Mediterraneo (Marriott Bonvoy) has a rooftop terrace with knockout views and a central location near the metro. Solid Bonvoy redemption, your status perks apply, and it has family rooms and connecting options for four.

Naples on cash

• Grand Hotel Vesuvio, the storied seafront grande dame with the Caruso rooftop and Vesuvius views, though know going in that it’s traditional and a touch dated in spots

• Romeo Napoli, the sleek Kenzo Tange-designed option by the port, with the Michelin-starred Il Comandante and a rooftop pool

• Grand Hotel Parker’s, up in the hills, with the Michelin-starred George and one of the great views of the bay

All three do four through suites or connecting rooms, with the Vesuvio and Parker’s offering the most space.

Pompeii

What we did: day-tripped in from Naples on the Circumvesuviana line, the cheap, local, slightly chaotic train that everyone takes (definitely some memorable people-watching here). You could also forgo this for a private transfer and tour for a more upscale, convenient experience. We did the archaeological site (give it a full half day minimum), the modern Pompei Duomo, dinner at a buffalo-mozzarella pizzeria in the new town, and, in a moment of pure travel-brain, curry sauce on fries at the Burger King.

Real talk on the luxury upgrade here: Pompeii itself is not where you base a luxury trip, and we didn’t. The genuine advisor move is exactly what we did, sleep in Naples (or out in Sorrento) and day-trip to the ruins, either by the Circumvesuviana or with a private driver, which for a family is worth every euro on a hot day. If you really want to stay near the site, Habita79 Pompeii (MGallery) is the local five-star, but I’d still anchor in Naples or Sorrento for the food and the views, unless you really want to spend more than a day in the ruins.

One pacing tip from the OT brain: Pompeii is exposed, uneven, and brutal in summer heat, with lots of stray dogs roaming. Go at opening, carry more water than you think you need, and build in a real rest before any evening plans.

More to do near Pompeii

If you’ve got the stamina for it:

• Pair the ruins with Herculaneum, which is smaller, far less crowded, and in some ways better preserved

• Add the Vesuvius crater hike (a bus runs up from Ercolano)

Eat in the new town like we did (because we were famished after a day of walking around the ruins), or save your appetite for better options in Naples.

Tuscany: Pisa and Florence

Pisa

What we did: the Leaning Tower, the Duomo, the Baptistry, and the Camposanto with the haunting Triumph of Death fresco, all in the Piazza dei Miracoli. Then Piazza dei Cavalieri, gelato, and a long lunch at a restaurant with the view.

Honest take: Pisa is a half-day, almost just to get that picture of you beside the leaning tower. The Piazza dei Miracoli is genuinely beautiful and worth seeing, but you don’t need to sleep here. Do it as a stop on the way to or from Florence, or as a day trip (or as a private tour to make the most of your time, with transportation included), and put your luxury nights in Florence or out in the Tuscan countryside.

More to do near Pisa

• Climb the tower if you’ve never (book a timed slot, and note kids generally have to be 8 or older)

• Pair it with Lucca, a walled town about 30 minutes by train where you can bike the Renaissance ramparts. It’s the smarter Tuscan base nearby.

• Eat your real lunch a few streets back from the Piazza dei Miracoli, never right on it. Two locals’ favorites: Osteria dei Cavalieri, a short walk from the tower (on the Michelin guide list, and it books up), and Pizzeria Il Montino, the century-old institution famous for cecina, the warm Pisan chickpea flatbread that costs a couple of euros and ruins you for all others.

Florence

What we did: the Uffizi, the Duomo (and yes, we climbed the cupola, which is a workout and a half), the Galleria dell’Accademia for the David, Piazza della Repubblica, the lucky bronze boar (Il Porcellino, rub the snout), a wine bar over by the Pitti Palace, the Ponte Vecchio, and two memorable dinners, one family-style and one at L’Oratorio di San Giovanni.

Cupola pacing note: those are 463 steps, narrow, with no elevator, and once you start there’s no turning back in the stairwell. If anyone in your group has knee, back, or breathing issues, the climb up Giotto’s Campanile or the dome viewpoint from Piazzale Michelangelo gives you the views with less physical exertion.

More to do in Florence

You covered the heavy hitters. If you have more time:

• The Bargello, for the sculpture the Uffizi and Accademia don’t have (Donatello’s David, Michelangelo marbles)

• The Boboli and Bardini Gardens, green space and a view right behind the Pitti where you had that wine

• The climb (or bus) up to San Miniato al Monte and Piazzale Michelangelo at sunset, the postcard of the whole city

• The Oltrarno for the artisan workshops

• The upstairs food hall at the Mercato Centrale, for grazing

Where to eat in Florence

Florence means bistecca alla fiorentina, a thick Chianina T-bone grilled rare, ordered for two and priced by weight. The classics:

• Trattoria Sostanza (since 1869, and their butter chicken is almost as famous as the steak)

• Trattoria Mario (lunch only, cash only, communal tables, the best value in the center)

• Buca Lapi and Buca Mario, the historic vaulted basements

• Il Santo Bevitore, for a lovely Oltrarno dinner

• Procacci, for an aperitivo with their truffle panino

• Vivoli, for gelato

• For the splurge: Il Palagio at the Four Seasons or Borgo San Jacopo at Hotel Lungarno, both Michelin-starred, plus Cibrèo at Helvetia & Bristol for elevated Florentine classics

Your dinner at L’Oratorio di San Giovanni fits right in too.

Florence on points

Florence is one of the best points cities in Italy right now.

• Il Tornabuoni, The Unbound Collection by Hyatt is the standout. It sits in a 13th-century palazzo on the chicest shopping street in town, with a rooftop champagne bar. Award nights have run around 25,000 Hyatt points against cash rates of 600 euros and up, the kind of two-to-three-cents-per-point value that makes Hyatt so beloved. If you collect Chase Ultimate Rewards, this is one of the best places in Italy to cash them in. For four, ask for a suite or connecting rooms.

• The St. Regis Florence and The Excelsior, a Luxury Collection Hotel (both Marriott Bonvoy) sit side by side on the Arno with Ponte Vecchio views. The St. Regis is a Brunelleschi-era palazzo and one of the prettiest hotels in the city.

• W Florence (Marriott) if you want modern, central, and a rooftop with Duomo views.

Quick honesty check on the other programs: Florence’s true luxury points game is Marriott and Hyatt, full stop. If you’re set on IHG, the Hotel Indigo Florence is a stylish four-star near Santa Maria Novella with an indoor pool and a good restaurant, but it isn’t five-star, and Hilton doesn’t have a genuinely central luxury property here. I’d spend my Florence points on the Tornabuoni or the Arno-front Marriotts.

Florence on cash

• Four Seasons Firenze, in a league of its own, with the largest private garden in the city, a real pool, and the Michelin-starred Il Palagio

• Portrait Firenze, the Ferragamo flagship on the river, all apartment-style suites and personal shopping

• Helvetia & Bristol and Hotel Savoy (Rocco Forte), the central classics

• Hotel Lungarno, with the Michelin-starred Borgo San Jacopo right on the water

Lake Como

This is where that dolce far niente idea I opened with actually pays off. After the cities, the lake is your exhale. You trade museums and crowds for boat rides, garden villas, and long lakeside lunches where doing nothing is the entire point (and maybe a sneak peak of George Clooney at his villa).

What we did, and what I’d tell any family to do: pick one base on the lake, stay put for a few nights, and let the ferries set the pace. The central lake is a triangle of pretty towns. Bellagio is the famous “pearl,” all steep cobbled stairs and boutiques. Varenna is quieter and more romantic, with easy train access from Milan. Menaggio and Tremezzo sit across the water. You hop between them by ferry, and honestly the ride is half the magic.

The villas are the headline act:

• Villa del Balbianello in Lenno, the one you’ve seen in Star Wars and Casino Royale, perched on a wooded point with gardens spilling down to the water

• Villa Carlotta in Tremezzina, and the gardens of Villa Melzi in Bellagio

• The funicular from Como town up to Brunate for the view back over the whole lake

• A vintage wooden speedboat for a sunset hour (splurgy, unforgettable, and the kids will lose their minds)

• At least one full do-nothing day by the pool. That is the assignment here.

Pacing note from the OT brain: Lake Como is vertical. Bellagio especially is all stairs, and ferry schedules eat time. Pick one base, do not hotel-hop, and let the slow days be slow.

Where to eat on Lake Como

• Mistral, the Michelin-starred room at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio, and Il Sereno’s Al Lago in Torno, for a polished night (several of the grand hotels, Villa d’Este, Tremezzo, and Il Sereno, send a complimentary boat to collect dinner guests, which is its own little event)

• Materia in Cernobbio, the serious, year-round Michelin option

• Cetino at the Lake Como EDITION, brand new, the first Italian restaurant from three-Michelin-star chef Mauro Colagreco

• For a relaxed lunch: the lakefront trattorias in Varenna (Al Prato is lovely), the little lanes of Bellagio (Ristorante Bilacus), and La Punta out at the tip of Bellagio, worth it for the view alone

Order the lake fish, pour a glass of something local, and slow down.

Lake Como on points

Here’s the surprise: the lake everyone assumes is cash-only just got two real points options.

• The Lake Como EDITION (Marriott Bonvoy) opened in March 2026 in Cadenabbia, a 148-room stunner with the largest floating pool on the lake, a longevity-focused spa, and Colagreco’s Cetino downstairs. A brand-new Bonvoy redemption in a place you could never use points before, and about 15 minutes by ferry from Bellagio.

• Hilton Lake Como (Hilton Honors) sits in Como town with a rooftop pool and a terrace looking over the rooftops to the water. The contemporary, walkable, family-friendly pick, and with Amex transferring to Hilton at 1:2, an easy points night to start or end the lake leg.

Lake Como on cash (the dream tier)

This is where the lake earns its reputation:

• Grand Hotel Tremezzo, the Belle Epoque icon with the famous floating “water on water” pool and views straight across to Bellagio. It often books through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts, so Platinum holders stack upgrades, breakfast, and a credit on top.

• Villa d’Este in Cernobbio, the storied 16th-century grande dame with its own legendary floating pool

• Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como in Blevio, with a spa carved into the rock and a serene lakefront

• Passalacqua, Tremezzo’s tiny sister property, named the best hotel in the world and nearly impossible to book, which tells you everything

Each of these takes a family of four in a suite or connecting rooms, but the smallest and most coveted (Passalacqua above all) book out a year ahead, so plan early.

Venice

I saved my favorite for the end, because Venice was a beautiful, mysterious place that stole my heart (and apparently its sinking, and may not be around for long - so see it while you can!)

What we did, and this is the section where my notes just turn into a love letter: the vaporetto down the Grand Canal to Piazza San Marco, the Doge’s Palace, a coffee break at Caffè Florian (overpriced, do it anyway, you’re paying for 300 years of history), the Basilica di San Marco, and a walking tour through Fondamenta Zattere, Santo Spirito, the Rialto Bridge, and the high-end shopping. We did the Jewish Ghetto, the oldest in the world. We hung out with locals at Al Prosecco in Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio over dolcetto and valpolicella, and with university students in Campo Santa Margherita over pizza by the slice. We had spritz with Campari and a Bellini near the hotel, hit the Venice Jazz Club, and had a long local dinner at Osteria ae Cravate with assorted cheese, wine, and tiramisu, which was my third of the trip and I regret nothing. We crossed the Accademia bridge and we walked every campo and every little street and canal we could find, which is the only correct way to “do” Venice.

One heads-up that’s brand new: as of April 2026, Venice charges an access fee for day visitors on certain high-traffic days. If you’re staying overnight in the city you’re generally exempt, but check before you go and keep proof of your booking handy.

Hot tip: you may have to carry your bags up and over a lot of bridges and steps, so plan your hotel’s location accordingly.

More to do in Venice

You did Venice the right way, on foot and by water. A few I’d add to the mix:

• The Peggy Guggenheim Collection, modern art right on the Grand Canal near where you wandered

• A half-day out to Murano for glass and Burano for the candy-colored houses

• The gloriously cluttered Libreria Acqua Alta bookshop

• The spiral Scala Contarini del Bovolo, for a quiet climb

• At least one traghetto crossing, the two-euro standing-gondola ferry the locals use to hop across the Grand Canal

Where to eat in Venice

Venice gets a bad food rap because so much of it is tourist-trap seafood, but the cicchetti culture is the move, and it’s the exact bar-hopping-with-snacks rhythm you already fell into at Al Prosecco. Build a crawl:

• All’Arco by the Rialto market, for crostini

• Cantine del Vino già Schiavi in Dorsoduro

• Do Mori (said to be the oldest bacaro, since 1462), for the little francobollo sandwiches

• Alla Vedova in Cannaregio, for the famous polpette

• Vini da Gigio in Cannaregio, a real step up for a sit-down dinner

• For the dream-tier splurge: the Terrazza Danieli rooftop or Oro at the Belmond Cipriani

Your Osteria ae Cravate night with the third tiramisu was perfect, too.

Venice on points

• The Gritti Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel (Marriott Bonvoy) is the most Venetian of the grand hotels, a 1475 palazzo right on the Grand Canal with the famous terrace. This is the one I’d burn points on. Watch for Bonvoy promo windows where standard or premium redemptions earn bonus points back.

• The St. Regis Venice (Marriott) is five minutes away, more contemporary, with a waterfront garden terrace.

• JW Marriott Venice sits on its own private island with a pool, which makes it the family pick of the three, with a shuttle into San Marco.

• Hilton Molino Stucky Venice (Hilton Honors) is the other strong family play, a converted flour mill on Giudecca with the only rooftop pool I’d actually plan a Venice summer around. It runs as low as about 55,000 Hilton points a night, it’s great at connecting rooms, and the free shuttle gets you to San Marco in five minutes. You trade central location for space, quiet, and that pool. With Amex transferring to Hilton at 1:2, the points math is friendly.

Venice on cash (the dream tier)

If money is no object:

• Aman Venice (palatial, 24 rooms, the kind of place that feels like a private museum)

• Belmond Hotel Cipriani (the best hotel pool in Venice, on Giudecca)

• Hotel Danieli, the historic landmark on the lagoon, with the Terrazza Danieli rooftop

For four, the Cipriani and the Danieli do connecting rooms and family suites easily, and Aman’s palazzo suites are large enough to share, so just confirm the layout when you book.

So how would I actually book this trip?

If I were planning these two weeks today, here’s the cheat sheet:

• Lean Hyatt where Hyatt is good. Rome (the new Regency, Category 4 and free-night-certificate eligible) and Florence (Il Tornabuoni) are your two best Hyatt redemptions, and they’re genuinely luxury. That alone can cover a big chunk of your nights.

• Move your Chase points to Hyatt. Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer to World of Hyatt, and Hyatt is the best-value currency for this trip, so those two Hyatt redemptions in Rome and Florence are where your transferable points stretch the furthest.

• Use Marriott for Venice, the Arno views, and now the lake. The best-located grand hotels in Venice (the Gritti, St. Regis, JW) are all Bonvoy, the Belle Epoque classics in Rome (St. Regis, Westin Excelsior) are too, and the brand-new Lake Como EDITION opens up a points stay on a lake that used to be cash-only.

• Use Hilton for the resort moments and the family pools (Rome Cavalieri, the Venice Molino Stucky rooftop, Hilton Lake Como in Como town, De Bonart in Naples), and remember Amex transfers to Hilton at 1:2.

• IHG fills the gaps if you’ve got One Rewards points: InterContinental Ambasciatori in Rome is the reasonable redemption, and Six Senses Rome is the wellness splurge (just not on points). It’s thinner than the other two in these cities, so I treat it as a backup, not the backbone.

• Pay cash where points just aren’t competitive, ideally through a luxury hotel program with perks: the Lake Como dream tier (Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Villa d’Este), the Florence Four Seasons, and the Venice dream-tier properties. Tremezzo in particular books through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts, so the upgrades, breakfast, and credits you get booking through the right channel are real money back.

• Don’t sleep everywhere you visit. Base smart. Naples for Pompeii, Florence for Pisa, one base on the lake, and let the day trips be day trips.

Two weeks, done slowly is the sweet spot. Do it on points if you can, or at least get the right credit card so your cash stays earn points for future travels. Practice a little dolce far niente, and eat the third tiramisu.

This is what I’d actually do, pulled from a real trip and the way I book for clients.

I hear you. The points world has a way of making a simple thing feel impossibly complicated as well as the fact things are always changing. So let me strip it all the way down. If I had to start over from zero, knowing everything I know now, here is exactly what I would do and in what order. No fluff, no twelve-card spreadsheet, no affiliate link gymnastics. Just the path.

First, the four things you actually need to understand

Forget everything you’ve read for a second. The whole game comes down to four ideas.

One: you want transferable points, not airline miles or cash back. Cash back is fine, but it’s the least valuable thing your spending can earn. The real magic is in flexible currencies like Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One miles, and Citi ThankYou points. These are valuable because you can move them to a bunch of different airlines and hotels, which means you’re never stuck. That flexibility is the entire point.

Two: the signup bonus is where the money is, not the everyday spending. People obsess over earning 2x versus 3x on groceries. Stop. A single welcome bonus on one card is often worth more than a full year of optimized everyday spending. The bonuses are how you actually rack up enough points to fly your family somewhere good. Everything else is rounding.

Three: this only works if you never carry a balance. Ever. I’m going to say this loudly because it matters more than any tip in this post. If you carry a balance and pay interest, the points are worthless. The interest will eat every bit of value and then some. This strategy is for people who pay their statement in full, every month, no exceptions. If that’s not you yet, get there first, then come back. I mean that with love.

Four: there’s a gatekeeper rule called 5/24, and it decides your starting move. Chase has a rule where they generally won’t approve you for their cards if you’ve opened five or more credit cards from any bank in the last 24 months. That sounds like a small detail. It’s actually the single most important reason beginners mess up the order. Because Chase has some of the best cards and the best transfer partners, you want to get your Chase cards FIRST, while your count is still low, before you fill up those slots with cards from other banks.

That’s it. Transferable points, chase the bonuses, never pay interest, start with Chase. If you understand those four things you’re already ahead of most people.

A little more on 5/24, because it will genuinely save you

Since 5/24 decides your whole starting order, it’s worth thirty more seconds. Here’s what actually counts toward that five-card limit:

∙ Almost every personal credit card you open from any bank counts. Chase, Amex, Capital One, Citi, your local bank, all of it.

∙ Store cards count too, and this is the big one. That Macy’s card the cashier talked you into at the register for 15% off? It just ate one of your five precious slots, for a card that earns you basically nothing and that you’ll never use again. Same goes for the Target card, the Banana Republic card, the Kohl’s card, every one of them. Do not waste a 5/24 slot on a store card. The 15% off your sweater is not worth burning a spot you could’ve used on a card worth tens of thousands of points and a flight to Hawaii.

∙ Being added as an authorized user on someone else’s card can count too, though you can usually get those removed from your count if needed.

What does NOT count: most business credit cards. Chase, Amex, and most issuers don’t report business cards to your personal credit report, so they don’t fill a 5/24 slot. (You still have to be under 5/24 for Chase to approve you for one, but opening it won’t push your own number up.) That’s a more advanced move for later, but it’s exactly why business cards are so beloved by people deeper into this hobby.

Bottom line for a beginner: treat your five slots over 24 months like they’re precious, because they are. Don’t let a checkout line talk you out of one.

The first card I would get, full stop

The Chase Sapphire Preferred. Every time. It is the best beginner card in the game and it isn’t close.

Here’s why it’s the one:

∙ The annual fee is $95. Chase just refreshed the card in June 2026 and kept that fee exactly where it’s been for years, which almost never happens.

∙ The points are Chase Ultimate Rewards, the most beginner-friendly transferable currency out there, with great airline and hotel partners.

∙ It comes with a $100 annual hotel credit through Chase Travel, which means the card nearly pays for its own annual fee with one hotel booking.

∙ Right now there’s a rare 100,000-point welcome bonus after you hit the minimum spend. Heads up, that’s an unusually high offer (the normal bonus floats around 75,000), so if you’ve been on the fence, this is a genuinely good moment.

The Chase cards worth knowing, so you can see the whole map

You do not need all of these. But it helps to see the full board so you understand where the Sapphire Preferred fits and what you might add later. These are the Chase cards that earn Ultimate Rewards, the flexible currency you actually want:

Personal cards:

∙ Chase Sapphire Preferred ($95) - your starter, the one I’d open first, every time.

∙ Chase Sapphire Reserve ($795) - the premium version with lounge access, and the one with the 1:1 Hyatt transfer ratio.

∙ Chase Freedom Unlimited (no annual fee) - a fantastic everyday earner that pairs perfectly with a Sapphire card.

∙ Chase Freedom Flex (no annual fee) - rotating 5x bonus categories each quarter, also no fee.

Business cards (for later, once you have any kind of side income, even a small one):

∙ Ink Business Preferred, Ink Business Cash, Ink Business Unlimited - the Ink family is where serious points players live, and remember, business cards don’t count against your 5/24.

Then there’s a whole world of Chase co-branded cards: United, Southwest, World of Hyatt, Marriott, IHG, Aeroplan, even the Disney and Amazon cards. Those earn that specific airline or hotel’s points instead of flexible Chase points, and they all still count toward 5/24, so be choosy. For a beginner, ignore these and stick with the Sapphire and Freedom cards. You can get fancy later.

Now the fun part: Player 1 and Player 2

Here’s the thing nobody tells beginners who have a spouse or partner. You’re not one person earning points. You’re a household. And a household has two engines instead of one.

This is what “Player 1 and Player 2” means. You each have your own credit profile, which means you can each earn your own welcome bonuses on the same cards. Two people, two bonuses, double the points, same strategy. And Chase lets you pool Ultimate Rewards points between people in the same household, so all those points can land in one account and be used together.

Let me show you a real first-year plan for a couple starting from zero.

Months 1 to 3: Player 1 opens the Chase Sapphire Preferred. They put normal household spending on it (groceries, gas, the electric bill, the stuff you’d buy anyway) until they hit the minimum spend. Bonus earned: roughly 100,000 points.

Months 4 to 6: Player 2 opens their own Chase Sapphire Preferred, ideally using Player 1’s referral link so Player 1 picks up a referral bonus on top. Player 2 runs the household spending through their card this time to hit the minimum spend. Bonus earned: another roughly 100,000 points, plus the referral points for Player 1.

Add that up. In about six months, just from two welcome bonuses and a referral, a couple is sitting on somewhere around 210,000 to 215,000 Chase points. From spending they were doing anyway. No extra money spent, no balance carried.

To put that in real terms: that’s enough to fly a family of four round-trip to Hawaii in economy with points to spare, or cover several nights at a nice hotel, or mix and match. From two cards. In half a year.

Months 7 to 12: branch out without leaving the Chase ecosystem. Now each of you can add a no-annual-fee Chase card like the Freedom Unlimited or Freedom Flex to keep earning Ultimate Rewards on everyday spending with nothing extra to pay. You stay under 5/24, you keep your points all in one family currency, and you’ve built a real foundation.

That’s the whole beginner blueprint. Two people, the same simple card, played in the right order.

So what can 210,000 points actually buy?

This is the part that makes it real, so let me give you actual trips you could book in economy with that ~210,000-point stash from the two-card play. One honest note before the fun: award prices move around with your dates and demand, and you’re always aiming for the lowest “saver” level seat. These are realistic ranges, not guarantees. But here’s the kind of thing that’s genuinely in reach.

A family of four to Hawaii, round trip. This is the headline, and your home airport matters a lot. From the West Coast, round-trip economy to Hawaii can run as low as 20,000 to 25,000 points per person, so all four of you is roughly 80,000 to 100,000 points, leaving a big chunk left over. Flying from Florida or the East Coast costs more, closer to 40,000 to 50,000 per person round trip, so a family of four lands around 160,000 to 200,000 points. Either way, your two bonuses can cover the flights for the whole family. You’d transfer your Chase points to United or Southwest to book it.

A family of four to Mexico or the Caribbean, round trip. Cancun, Cabo, the Caribbean: economy round trips often run 20,000 to 35,000 points per person through partners like United or Air Canada Aeroplan, and sometimes less with British Airways Avios for the shorter hops. Four people is roughly 80,000 to 140,000 points, which means you could pull off this trip AND still have points banked for a second getaway. For a beach-loving family this is the easiest, highest-odds win on the whole list.

Two adults to Europe, round trip. Yes, really, in economy. Round-trip economy to Europe runs around 60,000 points per person on United, and often less through Air France and KLM’s Flying Blue or through Aeroplan if you catch good availability. Two adults is roughly 120,000 to 140,000 points, comfortably inside your stash. Paris, Lisbon, Rome, on points, from two credit cards.

Or go wide instead of far. Domestic economy flights can dip as low as 5,000 to 12,500 points one-way. If you’d rather do a bunch of smaller trips than one big one, that same 210,000 points can mean a whole year of weekend getaways and trips to see family instead of a single international haul. There’s no wrong answer here. It’s your stash.

The point of all of this: two cards, played right, fund a real trip in economy for the people you love. That is the entire reason we play this game.

Wait, what about my credit score?

This is the number one fear I hear, so let me put it to rest. Done right, this strategy does not wreck your credit score. For a lot of people it slowly improves it.

Here’s why. Your score cares most about two things: paying on time every single time, and your utilization, which is how much of your available credit you’re actually using. Opening a new card raises your total available credit, and as long as you’re paying in full every month, that pushes your utilization down, which is good for your score. Yes, each application creates a small temporary dip from the hard inquiry, usually just a few points, and it bounces back within a few months. A new account also nudges your average account age down a touch. But those things are minor and they’re temporary.

What actually tanks a credit score is the exact stuff this strategy avoids: missing payments, and carrying big balances month to month. If you pay in full and on time, you are doing the single most important thing for your score, full stop. Plenty of people deep in this hobby have scores well over 800. The cards aren’t the enemy. Debt is.

Keep your cards open at least a year (this part matters)

Here’s one rule you really don’t want to break: keep a card open for at least a year before you even think about closing it. If you grab the welcome bonus and then close the card a couple months later, the bank can claw that bonus right back out of your account, and you’ll have done all of it for nothing. Closing cards quickly also makes you look like a bonus-chaser, which can hurt you when you apply for your next card. So just leave it open and let it sit. A year is the safe rule of thumb.

When you hit that one-year mark, your second annual fee will post, and that’s your decision point. You’ve got two clean options:

∙ Downgrade it. Usually the smarter move. You can switch your Sapphire Preferred to a no-annual-fee Chase card like the Freedom Unlimited, and you keep the account, the credit line, and the account age, all of which quietly help your credit score. You just stop paying the fee, and your points stay exactly where they are.

∙ Close it and get the fee back. If you’d rather just close it, do it within 30 days of that annual fee posting and Chase will refund the full fee, no questions asked. After that 30-day window, they won’t refund it, so set yourself a reminder. And before you close anything, move your points out first (transfer them to an airline or hotel partner, or shift them to another Chase card you’re keeping) so you never lose them.

Either way, never close a card with a balance on it, and never close one in a panic. You have time, and you have options.

A few honest guardrails before you go wild

Because I’ve watched people get a little too excited and make some beginner mistakes:

∙ Never, ever spend money you wouldn’t otherwise spend just to hit a bonus. If a card needs $5,000 in three months and you’d naturally spend $4,000, that last $1,000 of “fake” spending erases the value. Only chase bonuses you can hit with real, normal life.

∙ Space your applications out, at least 30 to 90 days between cards. Never apply for both Sapphire Preferreds in the same week. Let Player 1 get approved, hit their minimum spend, and get settled before Player 2 applies. Rapid-fire applications spook the banks and tank your approval odds. Slow is smooth, and smooth is what funds the trip.

∙ Keep a simple note of who opened what and when. Your future self, staring down the 5/24 rule in two years, will thank you. (My favorite free app for tracking this on my phone is called Travel Freely.)

∙ Use your points within a year-ish of earning them. Points slowly lose value over time as programs change their charts. They’re meant to be spent on trips, not hoarded like a dragon.

So if you’re starting today

Open one Chase Sapphire Preferred. Put your normal spending on it. Pay it in full. Hit the bonus. If you have a partner, repeat the play with them a few months later. That single sequence, done right, is more than enough to fund a real family trip, and it’s a foundation you can build on for years.

You don’t need the twelve-card spreadsheet. You don’t need to understand every transfer partner on day one. You need one good card, a little patience, and the discipline to never pay interest. The rest you’ll learn as you go, and I’ll be right here for it.

Of all the Hawaiian Islands, the Big Island is the one people get wrong before they even land.

They picture the postcard Hawai’i: golden beaches, swaying palms, a Mai Tai by a turquoise lagoon. Then they arrive, drive past miles of black lava fields under a gray sky and quietly panic that they booked the wrong island.

Here’s the truth I tell every family who asks me about it: the Big Island is not the islands you’ve seen on a screensaver. It’s stranger and bigger and more dramatic than that, and for the right family it’s the most unforgettable island in Hawai’i. For the wrong family it’s a long week of driving past rocks. So before you book it, let’s figure out which one you are.

What actually makes this island different

Hawai’i Island earned its nickname honestly. It’s larger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined, roughly the size of Connecticut, and it’s still growing, because it’s the youngest island in the chain and Kīlauea, one of the most active volcanoes on earth, keeps adding to it.

That size buys you something no other island can offer: range. The Big Island holds 10 of the world’s 14 climate zones, from tropical rainforest to high desert to actual polar tundra near the summits. You can stand on a black sand beach in the morning and see snow on Mauna Kea by afternoon. And Mauna Kea, measured from its base on the ocean floor, is technically the tallest mountain in the world, taller than Everest.

It’s not a beach island, and that’s the single most important thing to understand. It has a handful of stunning and genuinely unusual beaches, the golden sand of the Kohala Coast, the green sand of Papakōlea, the black sand of Punalu’u, but you don’t come here to lie on the sand for a week. You come here for the landscape itself.

Oh, and the coffee. The Kona region grows some of the best coffee on the planet on the slopes of Mauna Loa and touring a farm with a tasting is one of the easy, low-effort joys of this island.

Who the Big Island is perfect for

If your family lights up at any of these, book it without hesitation.

Nature and wildlife lovers. This is the island’s whole personality. Waterfalls, an active volcano, black and green sand beaches, rainforest hikes, bird watching, and the snorkeling is excellent. The iconic manta ray night swim is one of the most jaw-dropping things you can do in Hawai’i, and yes, there’s even a seahorse farm.

Photography enthusiasts. Lava fields that run for miles, an active volcano, snow-capped peaks, rainforest waterfalls, and three differently colored beaches. You will not run out of things to point a camera at.

Coffee people. Kona coffee farm tours and tastings are everywhere, and they’re a lovely, relaxed way to spend a morning.

Culture and history seekers. The Big Island is rich here: petroglyph fields in Waikoloa and at Volcanoes National Park, Hulihe’e Palace, the Kuamo’o battle site and Lekeleke burial grounds, and the deeply moving Pu’uhonua o Hōnaunau. If your family likes to understand a place, not just photograph it, this island delivers.

Who won’t love it

I’d rather you skip the Big Island than spend money on the wrong trip, so here’s the real talk.

It’s not for shoppers or anyone wanting a busy, urban vibe. There’s a little shopping in Kona, Hilo, and Waikoloa, but not what most people picture.

It’s not for the family that wants to park at one gorgeous beach and stay put. The beaches here are special but few, and they’re not the point.

And above all, it’s not for people who hate driving. This is the part that quietly wrecks Big Island trips. Things are genuinely far apart on an island this size, and you will spend real hours in the car getting from the volcano to the coast to the summit. If long drives with kids in the back sound like your personal nightmare, this might not be your island, or you’ll want to split your stay between two home bases to cut the driving down.

That last point is where I spend most of my planning energy for families, so let me come back to it.

A pacing note, because this island punishes over-scheduling

I plan family trips a little differently than most, because I spent years as an occupational therapist before I did this, and I think about a trip as a budget of energy, not a list of sights. The Big Island tests that budget harder than any other Hawaiian island, because the driving alone eats so much of the day.

So the rule I live by here (also my favorite rule for family trips with little kids): one big thing a day. The volcano is a big thing. The Mauna Kea summit and stargazing is a big thing. The manta ray night swim is a big thing. Pick one, build the rest of the day around it, and leave margin for the long drive and the inevitable kid meltdown or maybe even some long-awaited downtime at the resort. Families who try to stack the volcano and the summit and a waterfall hike into one day end up exhausted and crabby in paradise. Families who do less, and do it well, come home rejuvenated, saying it was the trip of a lifetime.

What to actually do

There’s no shortage of options. A sampling of what’s popular, from free-and-easy to book-ahead:

ATV tours, botanical gardens, coffee farms, golf, helicopter tours, hiking, historical sites, horseback riding, the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center, a lū’au, the manta ray night snorkel, museums, scuba diving, the seahorse farm, snorkeling, stargazing tours, sunset cruises, surfing, lava tubes and caves, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, waterfalls, and zip-lining.

Some of these you can do on your own for free. Others need a booked and paid reservation, and the best ones (manta rays, summit tours, popular tours in peak season) sell out, so don’t wait until you land to book them.

Where to snorkel

The Big Island snorkeling is genuinely some of the best in the state. Reliable spots:

Anaeho’omalu Bay, Fishbowl, Hōnaunau (Two Step), Ho’okena Beach, Kahalu’u Beach, Kailua Bay, Kealakekua Bay, Keauhou Point, Ke’ei Beach, Mauna Lani, and Pāwai Bay.

Kahalu’u is the easiest entry for beginners and kids. Two Step and Kealakekua are the showstoppers when conditions cooperate.

Hikes, history, and golf

For hikers: ‘Akaka Falls State Park, the Captain Cook Monument trail, Kalopa State Park, Kaumana Caves, Kīlauea Iki, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Napau Trail, Papakōlea (the green sand beach hike), Pololū Valley, Puna Trail, and the Thurston Lava Tube. A few of these require tickets or reservations, so check before you go.

For history: the Captain Cook Monument, Hulihe’e Palace, the King Kamehameha statue, the Kuamo’o battle site, Ku’emanu Heiau, Lekeleke burial grounds, the Lyman Museum and Mission House, the Naha Stone, the Puakō petroglyphs, Pu’uhonua o Hōnaunau, and Pu’ukoholā Heiau.

And for golfers, the Big Island is spoiled: Hapuna, Hualālai, Kona Country Club, Makalei, Makani, Mauna Kea, the Mauna Lani courses, Volcano, and the Waikoloa Beach, King’s, and Village courses.

Where to eat

The Big Island won’t out-restaurant O’ahu or Maui, but it has real gems, and it’s the birthplace of the loco moco (rice, a hamburger patty, a fried egg, and gravy, and yes, you should try it). Expect everything from fresh seafood and farm-to-table to food trucks and old-school local spots.

A few I love: Merriman’s, Roy’s Waikoloa, Papa Kona, Huggo’s, Lava Lava Beach Club, Hilo Bay Cafe, Kona Brewing Company, Cafe 100, Ken’s House of Pancakes, Broke Da Mouth Grindz, Cafe Pesto, Da Poke Shack, Canoe House, Island Fish & Chips, Pueo’s Osteria, Pineapples Island Fresh, and Foster’s Kitchen.

Reservations are smart for dinner at most of these, especially in season.

So, is the Big Island your island?

If your family wants drama, nature, and the kind of landscape that makes your kids gasp, and you don’t mind trading beach lounging and short drives for volcanoes and adventure, the Big Island is magic. So most families do the math, change their mind, and book economy. Or they don’t go at all.

Here’s the thing I want you to understand: last summer I flew my whole family to Paris and back in business class, stayed seven nights in a five-star hotel directly across the street from the Louvre, and paid for almost none of it in cash. Points I earned on regular spending I was already doing covered the flights and the hotel both. Groceries. The boring stuff we’d spend on anyway: utility bills, soccer uniforms, swim registration, the cell phone bill. The same money leaving my account either way, just routed through the right cards.

This is the post where I show you the exact order I’d open cards in, what each one currently earns, and how it all adds up to a real family trip. I’ll use my own Paris trip as the proof at the end, because I think theory is boring and receipts are not.

First, the one idea that makes all of this work

Most people earn the wrong kind of points.

If you put all your spending on a single airline’s credit card, you’re stuck with that one airline. If their award seats are gone, you’re gone too.

What you want instead are transferable points. The big banks (Capital One, American Express, Chase, Citi) have their own points currencies that you can move into a whole list of airline and hotel programs whenever you actually need them. You hold the points, you watch for an open business class seat, and then you transfer. Flexibility is the entire game.

And here’s the mistake I want to save you from. When I first used credit card points to pay for a trip, I booked it straight through the card’s own travel portal. Big mistake. Huge. You leave most of the value sitting on the table that way. The real magic is taking those points (Amex, Chase, Capital One) and transferring them into airline and hotel partners. For this trip I moved mine into Air Canada (Aeroplan), Flying Blue (Air France and KLM), and World of Hyatt. That’s where the value lives.

The two I lean on hardest for flights, and the two that got us across the Atlantic, are Capital One miles and Amex Membership Rewards. Both transfer 1 to 1 into Flying Blue and into Aeroplan. Those two programs are how you get a family across the ocean without selling a kidney.

For hotels, the heavy hitter is Chase Ultimate Rewards, because it transfers into World of Hyatt (side note: I love Hyatt SO much), which stretches further than any other hotel program. That’s how we got the week in Paris. I’ll come back to it when we get to where we slept.

Hold that thought. Here’s how you build the pile.

The card order, for two adults, over about a year

A family of four usually has two adults, and that’s a gift, because each adult is a separate “player” who can earn their own welcome bonuses. Welcome bonuses are where the real points live. Everyday spending is the slow drip. Bonuses are the flood.

Here’s the order I’d run it in. (Bonuses change constantly. Every number below is current as I write this and will be different in three months, so always check the live offer before you apply.)

Round 1, months 1 through 3. Both adults open a Capital One Venture or Venture X.

The current welcome offer on each is 75,000 miles after you spend $4,000 in the first three months. Two adults doing this is 150,000 miles from the bonuses alone, plus another 15,000 or so from the spending itself (these cards earn 2 miles per dollar on everything). Call it 165,000 Capital One miles before you’ve done anything clever.

The Venture X has a $395 annual fee but hands back a $300 travel credit and a 10,000-mile anniversary bonus, so it mostly pays for itself. The plain Venture has a smaller fee. Either works for this.

Round 2, months 4 through 9. One adult opens an Amex card that earns Membership Rewards.

The Amex Platinum is the big swing here. Its welcome offer has run as high as 175,000 points (offers are targeted and vary by person, so yours may be lower, check before applying). Even a more typical offer in the 80,000 to 125,000 range is enormous. The Amex Gold is a lighter-fee alternative with its own solid bonus and great earning on groceries and dining, which, if you’re feeding small humans, is most of your spending anyway.

Round 3, months 7 through 12. The other adult opens a second Membership Rewards card.

Same idea, second player. Another 60,000 to 125,000 points depending on the card and the offer you’re shown.

The referral trick, running underneath all of it. This is the part people forget when there are two of you. Once one adult holds a card, they can refer the other adult to it before that person applies. The referrer earns a referral bonus (often 15,000 to 25,000 points or more), and the new applicant still gets the full welcome offer. So you refer each other back and forth as you work through the cards. Same applications you were doing anyway, with an extra bonus stapled to each one. Two rules: always apply through the referral link rather than the public page, and check first that the public offer isn’t actually higher, because sometimes it is.

Where you land after a year: somewhere around 350,000 to 450,000 transferable points from welcome bonuses and ordinary spending, and with referrals stacked on top, closer to 450,000 to 500,000-plus. You did not change your life. You changed which card you swiped, and who you referred.

Now the trip math

Here are the real redemption rates, the ones that turn points into seats:

Through Flying Blue (Air France and KLM), business class to Europe starts around 60,000 miles one way. Both Capital One and Amex transfer in at 1 to 1, so the bank points convert straight across.

My favorite perk of business class has to be the lie-flat seats. On an overnight flight across the Atlantic, they let everyone get a few real hours of sleep, so we land something close to human instead of wrecked. Here’s the real target:

• Four people in business, one way: 4 times 60,000 = 240,000 miles (some airlines charge fewer points for a child, or for an infant in their own seat)

• Round trip: about 480,000 miles, plus the taxes and fees in cash (usually a few hundred dollars total, more if you route through London)

Look back at the card order. A year of two-player bonuses gets you most of the way there, and the referral trick closes the gap. That is the entire trick. The “impossible” twenty-thousand-dollar family business class trip is roughly a year of disciplined card opening and ordinary spending.

How I actually did it (the receipts)

None of the above is theoretical for me. Here’s the trip I took with my family last summer, booked exactly this way.

We were two adults, one child, and a baby. Here’s exactly what it cost.

Getting there, through Aeroplan (Air Canada’s program). Tampa to Paris, routed through Zurich, with the last hop into Paris on Edelweiss. Four seats: two adults, one child, and the baby in their own seat.

• Air transportation, in points: 280,000 Aeroplan points

• Taxes, fees, and charges: CA $364.70

Coming home, through Flying Blue (Air France). Paris to Orlando, business class. Three seats this time, because the toddler rode on my lap instead of taking a seat.

• Paid in miles: 210,375 Flying Blue miles

• Taxes and surcharges: $417.90

All of it funded by Capital One Venture miles and Amex Membership Rewards, transferred into Aeroplan and Flying Blue once I’d found the seats. Two bank currencies, two airline programs, one very comfortable flat bed across the ocean with my kids.

The grand total for the whole family, round trip: about 490,000 miles and a little under $700 in taxes and fees (one booking was billed in Canadian dollars, hence the mixed currencies above).

Now the part that matters. Business class seats to Europe like these tend to price somewhere between $3,000 and $6,000 each in cash. For a family of four, that’s well over fifteen thousand dollars in airfare. I paid it with points I earned on spending I was already doing, plus a tax bill smaller than a single economy ticket.

That 490,000 miles lines up almost exactly with the all-business family number we did the math for earlier. This trip is what that number looks like when it actually lands.

And we didn’t pay for the hotel either

Flights were only half of it. We stayed seven nights at the Hôtel du Louvre, a five-star Hyatt property sitting directly across from the museum in the first arrondissement, about as central as Paris gets. Also on points.

This is where that third currency I mentioned comes in. I earn Chase Ultimate Rewards on my Chase Sapphire Preferred and a couple of Chase Ink business cards (and yes, a real side hustle can qualify you for a business card, a travel advisory absolutely counts). Chase points transfer 1 to 1 into World of Hyatt, and Hyatt is the best hotel program going for turning points into nights that would otherwise wreck a budget.

Seven nights in central Paris in summer, in cash, is the kind of number that makes you quietly close the browser tab. Easily $700 to $1,400 a night, so comfortably north of $5,000 for the week. We paid:

• 245,000 World of Hyatt points

• And a room upgrade I did not pay for at all (one email, coming up next)

One honest flag, because this is the no-fairy-tales newsletter. I booked this last summer, and the rules have since gotten worse on two fronts. The Hôtel du Louvre jumped from Hyatt Category 7 to Category 8 in May 2026, and Hyatt rebuilt its entire award chart so the top tier can now run as high as 75,000 points a night. At the same time, Chase is cutting the transfer ratio to Hyatt for the Sapphire Preferred and Ink cards from 1 to 1 down to 4 to 3, meaning you get only 3 Hyatt points for every 4 Chase points. Only the pricier Sapphire Reserve keeps the full 1 to 1. So copying this exact stay today costs more than it cost me. The strategy still works beautifully. The specific price tag moved, and I’d rather tell you that than pretend it didn’t.

The upgrade was free too, and it took one email

Here’s the part almost nobody bothers with. About a week before we arrived, I sent the general manager at the hotel a short, warm pre-arrival email. Not a demand, not a list of what I felt owed. Just a friendly note that mentioned we were traveling as a family on a special trip, asked if a higher floor or a nicer room might be possible, and made it easy for them to say yes. We were upgraded at check-in.

Keep it short, keep it human, and never let it tip into entitled. A hotel upgrades the guest they’d be happy to see again, not the one waving status in their face. Booking through a travel advisor with the right hotel relationships gets you these perks confirmed in advance instead of hoped for, but a kind email is the free version anyone can send.

So here’s the whole thing, all in. Business class flights for the family, plus a week in a hotel across the street from the Louvre, would have cost well over twenty thousand dollars in cash. We paid for it with points earned on completely ordinary spending, plus a tax-and-fee bill of a few hundred dollars. That is the entire game.

The mistakes that quietly wreck this

Three things, because honesty is the brand.

Never carry a balance to chase points. Interest eats any redemption value instantly and then some. This whole strategy only works if you pay in full every month. If that’s not where you are right now, this isn’t the season for it, and that’s completely fine.

Don’t transfer points until you’ve found the seat. Transfers are one-way and permanent. You confirm the award space is actually there, then you move the points. Moving them “to have them ready” is how people end up with miles stranded in a program with no seats.

Don’t hoard. Points lose value over time as programs raise their prices. The goal is to earn them, use them on a real trip, and go. Watching a balance grow is not the win. The flat bed to Paris is the win.

That’s the system

Two players, a sane card order, ordinary spending, and a little patience. That’s how a regular family flies up front to Europe once a year without it touching the actual budget in any way that hurts.

It is genuinely not complicated. It just requires doing it in the right order and not talking yourself out of it.

You know the one. The five-year-old is crying about a sock. The teenager has gone fully nonverbal. Your partner is doing the thing where they sigh and look out the window. And you — the person who planned this “dream trip,” who booked the flights and color-coded the itinerary and researched the best gelato within a 0.4-mile radius — you are overstimulated and standing in a beautiful piazza wondering why everyone is miserable in paradise.

I planned that exact afternoon into existence more times than I’d like to admit. And I’m supposed to be good at this.

Here’s what finally fixed it. It’s not a packing hack. It’s not an app. It’s one rule, and it’s almost insultingly simple:

One big thing a day. That’s it.

The math nobody does before they book because when you are on vacation you want to see it all, do it all. BUT family travel is different.

Before I was a travel advisor, I spent fifteen years as an occupational therapist. That job is, at its core, the study of how real human bodies and brains handle the demands of a real day — how much they can take before something breaks. How to maximize function with what you actually have. I spent a decade and a half watching people hit their limit, and learning to see it coming.

So when I look at a family itinerary, I’m not seeing a list of fun activities. I’m seeing a nervous-system budget. And most family itineraries are wildly overdrawn.

Here’s the thing every “10 Must-Do’s in Paris” article conveniently leaves out: a “must-do” is a withdrawal. The museum is a withdrawal. The walking tour is a withdrawal. The 90-minute wait for the famous thing is a big withdrawal. Kids — and honestly, the adults too — have a finite number of these in them per day before the account hits zero and the 4 p.m. piazza meltdown arrives, right on schedule.

The “one big thing a day” rule is just budgeting. You get one major withdrawal. Everything else has to be a deposit, or close to free.

What “one big thing” actually means

A big thing is anything that requires the whole family to be On: somewhere to be at a certain time, a ticket, a line, sustained walking, sustained behaving. The aquarium. The boat tour. The theme park. The temple that requires “appropriate attire” and forty minutes of metro.

Pick one. Build the rest of the day around recovery:

∙ A morning at the big thing, then a long lazy lunch and a pool afternoon where nobody has to be anyone.

∙ Or a slow morning — pastries, no agenda, kids burning energy somewhere safe — and the big thing after a nap, when everyone’s tank is full again.

The trip stops being a forced march between highlights and starts being something your family actually wants to be on. Counterintuitively, you also remember more, because a brain at the bottom of its budget doesn’t form good memories. It just survives.

The part where people fight me on this

I know what you’re thinking, because every client thinks it: “But we paid all this money / flew all this way / may never come back — we have to maximize it.”

I get it. I feel the same pull. But “maximizing” by cramming in six things is how you end up with six half-experienced things and a family that associates travel with stress. One fully-present big thing beats three resented ones. Every single time.

The families who try to do everything are the ones who come home saying they need a vacation from their vacation. The families who do one big thing a day come home saying it was the best trip they’ve ever taken — and they did, objectively, less.

A real example

Last summer my family spent a week in Paris -a magical place with endless options of activities, tourist sites and things to do. Since I was traveling with a one year old toddler and 7 year old boy I knew we wouldn’t be able to accomplish many things in a day. A few months before we left I got my older son a guide book on Paris and together we looked at it and picked out what we wanted to do on our trip. I wanted him engaged and involved to create memories and help him feel responsible for the plan. After that was done I put on my travel advisor hat researched each destination by where it was located and then best time to go and created our itinerary where we would focus on one thing a day. This gave us lots of time to have mornings or evenings free to just wander around, take a long nap at our hotel or spend time sitting at a cafe without feeling rushed and honestly it made the vacation feel like more of an experience than a rushed trip where were frantically trying to cross off items on a list. My son even got to play a pick up game of soccer with a new child he met with the Eiffel Tower in the background and that will forever be a memory we cherish.

How to actually use this

Next time you’re planning, list every activity you want to do. Then assign exactly one per day to the “big thing” slot. Whatever’s left over either becomes a deposit-day activity (low-key, no schedule) or it gets cut — and I promise you, the cut ones are never the ones you remember missing.

That’s the whole rule. It’s the first thing I do for every family I plan for, before I touch a single hotel or flight. Because the fanciest resort in the world can’t save a trip that’s overdrawn by Tuesday.
